Should I be getting my hopes up?

My boyfriend and I just started trying for our first baby. We figured out when I should be ovulating, and well, you know! My period isn't due for another 5 days. It is ALWAYS like clockwork. But i have had some light cramping and this evening I had some spotting, but it quit as quickly as it started. Which is odd because I've never had this happen before. I've also had some tenderness and swelling, but only in one . I don't want to get too excited and my boyfriend wants me to wait until after the day my period is due to take a home pregnancy test, and because he is out of town for the next 2 days I don't want to take one without him. I guess I would just like to know whether or not this is normal or if it is a sign that we may have gotten it right on the very first try!?
