How will I be elligable to work in the U.K. being married to a Lithuanian lady If Im South African?

My new wife from Lithuania and I (From South Africa) just got married in the U.K. I had a two year working Visa that will run out in February 2007. She is part of the e.u. but she has not had a legal job in the U.K. She has not been paying her tax as she earns less than the taxable amount a year.The home office say that I can apply for a Spouse Visa only If My wife has worked in the U.K. for 12 months. Could she somehow get registered now and pay all her tax (If any owed) for the past year? She has only been working for a year and a bit. We could both go live in South Africa but I have a good job in the U.K. and some great friends. Could someone please help me? Im stuck.
