Why does America love mean and condescending politicians?

Why is it that mean spirited candidates like Sarah Palin and George W Bush are so successful in the U.S.? Is it simply the American nature to mock, condescend and belittle? Does it make us feel better about ourselves to put others down? Just what it is that draw Americans to these miserable people?
