Windows Media Player 11 won't play mp3?

WMP 11 has played mp3 files before, but now it won't. It's saying "an audio codec is need to play this file. To determine if this codec is available to download from the Web, click Web Help." I clicked web help, and it said they don't have the codec necessary. How do I get WMP to play mp3???? thanks
